Hi, I’m Prof. Seidler Rodrigo, head instructor here at Gracie Barra West Jordan, and today I want to talk about something that surprises a lot of people:
Which belt is the hardest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
When I ask this question in class, I usually get a mix of answers—some say black because of the years of training, others say brown because of the pressure of what’s next. And while there’s truth in all those perspectives, I always tell them the same thing:
The hardest belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the white belt.
Not because it requires the most technical ability. And not because it’s the most physically demanding. The white belt is the hardest because it’s the one you have to earn before you ever step on the mat. It’s the one that requires the most courage.
Why White Belt Is the Hardest Belt in Jiu-Jitsu
The decision to try something new, especially something as unfamiliar as Jiu-Jitsu, is not an easy one for most people. I’ve seen this hesitation time and time again. People stop by our Jiu Jitsu school, look through the window, talk to us, smile politely, and say, “Maybe next week.”
The truth is, starting is the hardest part. Not because of the techniques you’ll learn or the workouts you’ll do, but because of the mental barriers that hold so many people back.
Here are just a few of the thoughts I’ve heard from people thinking about starting Jiu-Jitsu:
- “I’m too out of shape.”
- “This is probably just for young people.”
- “What if I’m the only beginner?”
- “I don’t want to look silly in front of others.”
- “I’m not flexible enough.”
- “I’ve never done martial arts before.”
- “I’m too old to start something new.”
These thoughts are completely normal, and incredibly common. But they’re also holding people back from something that could positively transform their lives.
And that’s why I say: the white belt is the hardest. Because it’s the one that represents the decision to start despite the fears, doubts, and excuses.
From Decision to Discipline: What Happens After You Begin
Once someone takes that leap and puts on the white belt for the first time, something shifts. You’ve already done the hardest part, you’ve shown up. And from that moment forward, every step gets a little bit easier.
The journey from white belt to blue belt is often where the most growth happens, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. It’s where you learn how to fall and get back up. How to stay calm in uncomfortable situations. How to keep trying even when things feel difficult. These are skills that go far beyond the mat.
Many of our students tell us that their first few weeks of training were full of doubts. But then something clicked. They started to feel more energized. They found themselves sleeping better. They noticed their stress levels dropping, their focus at work or school improving, and their sense of purpose getting stronger.
What they didn’t expect was how quickly they’d start enjoying it.
Yes, the techniques are challenging. Yes, you’ll be pushed. But the support, encouragement, and sense of community at Gracie Barra West Jordan make it feel less like a test, and more like a team effort. You’re never alone in this.
Why People Join Jiu-Jitsu, and Why They Stay
People walk through our doors for many reasons. Some come because they want to get in shape. Others are looking for a positive activity for their kids. Some want to learn how to defend themselves. Others are seeking structure, discipline, or a way to deal with stress.
Whatever the reason, here’s what keeps them coming back:
- Improved health and fitness – Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout that builds strength, endurance, and flexibility.
- Greater self-confidence – The more you learn, the more capable you feel in all areas of life.
- Mental clarity and emotional control – Training teaches you how to stay calm under pressure, on the mats and in life.
- A sense of purpose – Setting goals and progressing through the ranks gives you something meaningful to strive for.
- Belonging and community – Our school is a second family. No egos. No judgment. Just support, friendship, and mutual growth.
We’ve had students tell us that Jiu-Jitsu helped them manage anxiety, lose weight, build friendships, and even shift their mindset in a way that impacted their relationships, careers, and personal goals.
Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art. It’s a lifestyle, and one that helps people become the best version of themselves.
What the White Belt Teaches Us
People often think the white belt is a time of waiting, waiting to get good, waiting to move up, waiting to feel confident. But in reality, white belt is when the deepest transformation begins.
It’s the season of the most growth. It’s when you learn to be patient with yourself, to ask for help, to fail, and try again. You learn that progress isn’t always obvious day to day, but that showing up matters more than being perfect.
And perhaps most importantly, you begin to let go of the idea that you need to “be ready” to start something.
No one starts Jiu-Jitsu ready. We all begin unsure. The difference is that some of us simply take that first step.
You Don’t Need to Be Ready, You Just Need to Start
If you’ve been thinking about trying Jiu-Jitsu, but haven’t taken that first step yet, I want to tell you: you’re not alone. Almost every student you see training today at Gracie Barra West Jordan had those same fears at one point.
They were nervous. They were unsure. They didn’t know if they could do it.
And now? They’re showing up. They’re growing. They’re discovering strength they didn’t know they had. All because they took that one first step.
You don’t need to be fit, flexible, fast, or fearless. You just need to be willing. We’ll meet you where you are, and walk with you from there.
