BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FOR KIDS
1. What age can kids start jiu-jitsu at Gracie Barra West Jordan?
We’re thrilled to welcome kids as young as 4 years old into our GBK (Gracie Barra Kids) program! For our youngest students, the classes are all about having fun while developing motor skills, balance, coordination, and learning how to interact with others through engaging, age-appropriate games. We’d love for you to bring your little one in to try it out! Go ahead and book a free trial class right here to see the smiles for yourself.
2. Is jiu-jitsu safe for children?
Absolutely! Safety is our number one priority on the mat. Our kids’ classes focus entirely on grappling and moving safely with a partner on our padded mats, there is absolutely no punching or kicking involved. Our instructors are specially trained to work with children, ensuring they learn the right techniques in a super controlled and safe environment.
3. How does jiu-jitsu help my child deal with bullying?
Jiu-Jitsu equips kids with two incredible tools: genuine confidence and effective technique. We always teach our students to use their words and confident posture first, seek help from a trusted adult second, and only use physical techniques as a very last resort. What we usually see is that bullies tend to steer clear of kids who carry themselves with that kind of grounded confidence!
4. What are the biggest benefits of jiu-jitsu for kids?
While Jiu-Jitsu is fantastic for improving coordination, balance, and body awareness, the most amazing changes happen in their mindset. Kids learn valuable life skills like discipline, respect for their peers, and how to handle frustration in a healthy, constructive way. They build a true sense of self-confidence that shines through at school, at home, and in their friendships. Want to see these benefits in action? Book a free trial today!
5. How does the belt system work for kids?
Kids get to progress through their own fun and colorful belt system:
White → Gray → Yellow → Orange → Green.
Each new belt is a celebration of their hard work, improved technique, and character growth. We make a big deal out of every promotion because they’ve truly earned it, and we love celebrating as a team!
6. Does my child have to compete?
Not at all! Competing is 100% optional. If your child is interested in tournaments, we think it’s a wonderful experience and we’ll be right there to support and prepare them. However, our main goals are always focused on self-defense, staying healthy, having fun, and building great character, not just winning medals.
7. Is jiu-jitsu good for kids who have a lot of energy or trouble focusing?
It’s absolutely fantastic for them! Jiu-Jitsu provides a great structured environment where kids can channel all that high energy into something super positive. We often see kids with ADHD or just boundless energy show incredible improvements in their focus and ability to regulate their emotions after just a few weeks on the mat.
8. Can my daughter train in kids’ jiu-jitsu classes?
Yes, absolutely! Our kids’ classes are co-ed, and girls do amazingly well in them. They get to build their fitness, learn how to defend themselves early on, and grow up with unshakeable self-confidence. In fact, some of our most dedicated and skilled young students are girls!
9. What should my child wear to the first class?
For your child’s free trial class, just dress them in comfortable athletic clothes, a simple t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants without any zippers or buttons work perfectly. To make sure they get the full Gracie Barra experience, we’ll provide a full uniform (Gi) for them to wear during the class!
10. What’s the difference between kids’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and karate or taekwondo?
While martial arts like karate and taekwondo focus heavily on striking (punches and kicks), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is all about takedowns and controlling the situation on the ground without any striking. This means kids can practice their moves safely with a resisting partner without the fear of getting hit. The confidence they build comes from knowing techniques that really work! Our kids’ classes at GB West Jordan are incredibly fun and engaging.
11. Will jiu-jitsu affect my child’s growth or physical development?
Not at all, it’s actually great for their development! Regular, structured physical activity helps promote healthy bones and muscles. Our instructors are trained to understand and respect each child’s physical limits, ensuring they learn at a pace that’s perfect for their growing bodies.
12. How does a jiu-jitsu class teach discipline?
Discipline is built right into the structure of our classes. Kids learn to line up, bow respectfully to their instructors, keep their uniforms neat, and listen quietly when being taught. They also learn the valuable lessons of winning with humility and losing with grace, habits they naturally take with them to school and home.
13. My child has special needs. Can they train jiu-jitsu?
We are proudly an inclusive school and truly believe that Jiu-Jitsu can offer wonderful cognitive, motor, and social benefits for children with various needs. Please contact us before your visit so our instructors can get to know a bit about your child and ensure we provide the best, most welcoming experience possible!
14. How many days a week should my child train?
For most kids, coming in two to three times a week is the perfect sweet spot. It’s enough time on the mat to build real skills and establish a healthy routine, without making training feel like a chore.
15. How do I get my child started at Gracie Barra West Jordan?
It’s super easy! Just book a free trial class or reach out to our friendly team. We love showing families around the academy, answering any questions you might have, and letting your child feel the great energy on the mat before you make any commitments.
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FOR TEENS
16. Is jiu-jitsu a good sport for teenagers?
It’s honestly one of the best! The teenage years are full of changes and energy, and the mat provides a incredibly healthy outlet. At Gracie Barra West Jordan, teens find a positive peer group and a real sense of purpose while building fitness, mental toughness, and emotional balance in a structured environment.
17. Can a teenager with zero experience start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
100% yes! Most of our teens walk in the door with absolutely no martial arts experience, and that is completely normal. Our instructors are experts at teaching every technique from the ground up, so beginners always feel supported. Why not book a free trial for your teen? They can even bring a friend along to share the fun!
18. Does jiu-jitsu help with teenage anxiety and stress?
It helps immensely. The physical workout of Jiu-Jitsu releases feel-good endorphins and helps burn off stress. Plus, the focus required on the mat means they can’t be worrying about school exams or social drama while they’re training. Teens often tell us they arrive feeling stressed but leave feeling calm and clear-headed.
19. Will my teenager learn real self-defense?
Yes, they will learn practical, tested self-defense skills. We teach teens how to use leverage and proper technique to handle situations even if the other person is bigger or stronger. Knowing they can protect themselves builds a quiet, strong confidence that is often the best way to prevent bullying.
20. Will my teen train with adults in the same class?
We have a dedicated teens program here at Gracie Barra West Jordan so they can train with their peers! Once they reach about 15 or 16, depending on their skill and maturity, we help them safely transition into our adult classes. Our coaches are always paying close attention to make sure everyone is paired up safely.
21. At what age can a teenager earn a blue belt?
According to the official rules, students need to be at least 16 years old to receive their blue belt. Until then, they get to progress through our youth belts (gray, yellow, orange, and green). Earning a blue belt as a teen is a huge milestone, and we love celebrating it!
22. Is jiu-jitsu safe for teenagers? What about injuries?
Like any physical sport, bumps and bruises can happen, but Jiu-Jitsu has an amazing safety culture centered around “tapping out”, a simple tap that immediately stops the practice. We teach this from day one! Safety is always our top priority, and our instructors are always keeping a watchful eye.
23. How does jiu-jitsu build character in teenagers?
The mat is a great equalizer. Teens learn quickly that hard work pays off, that making mistakes is just part of learning, and that treating everyone with respect is an absolute must. These are powerful life lessons that will stick with them long after they leave the academy.
24. Will jiu-jitsu hurt my teenager’s grades or school schedule?
Usually, it’s the exact opposite! The discipline they learn on the mat often translates to better focus in the classroom. Plus, a good workout leads to better sleep and more energy. Spending a few hours a week training is a great investment in their mental health and focus.
25. Will jiu-jitsu make my teenager more aggressive?
Not at all. In fact, teens who train have a safe place to channel their energy, which helps them develop great self-control. When they feel confident in their ability to defend themselves, they don’t feel the need to act tough. Our students are known for being respectful, calm, and mature.
26. My teenage daughter wants to train. Is it welcoming for girls?
Absolutely! We love having teen girls in our program, and they often become some of our most outstanding students. The combination of fitness, real self-defense skills, and the huge boost in confidence is especially wonderful during the teenage years. We’d love for her to try a free class!
27. Does a teenager need to be athletic or strong to start BJJ?
Nope! Jiu-Jitsu was literally created so that a smaller, weaker person could successfully defend against a larger, stronger one using smart techniques. They don’t need to be in shape to start; the strength and conditioning will naturally come as they train!
28. How does jiu-jitsu help a teen who wants to do MMA one day?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the absolute foundation of grappling in modern MMA. Almost every successful fighter has a strong background in BJJ. Starting as a teen gives them a massive head start on learning ground control, body awareness, and the mental toughness needed for MMA down the road.
29. Can teens compete in jiu-jitsu tournaments?
Yes, they sure can! There are plenty of youth and teen divisions in local and national tournaments where they are matched fairly by age and weight. We love supporting our students who want to compete and will help them prepare, but remember, competing is always totally optional!
30. How much does BJJ cost for a teenager at Gracie Barra West Jordan?
Our monthly tuition can vary, so we encourage you to visit our membership page to check out our current pricing and any awesome promotions we might be running! The best way to start is by booking a free trial class so you can experience it firsthand before deciding.
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FOR WOMEN
31. Is jiu-jitsu actually effective for women’s self-defense?
It truly is! Many experts consider Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the most effective self-defense system for women. It was specifically designed to help a smaller person control and neutralize a larger attacker by using smart leverage and technique rather than just trying to use raw strength.
32. I’m a woman with no martial arts experience. Can I start BJJ?
Yes, please do! You will fit right in. Every single person starts as a beginner. Our GBF (Gracie Barra Fundamentals for Women) program is built exactly for women who have never stepped on a mat before. It’s a super supportive, step-by-step introduction to the art.
33. Do you have women-only classes?
We sure do! Gracie Barra West Jordan is proud to offer training focused specifically on women in a really inclusive and welcoming environment. Our GBF program is tailored for our female students, led by instructors who truly understand how to support you on your journey. You can learn more about it right here.
34. What are the physical benefits of BJJ for women?
It’s an incredible full-body workout! In just one class, you’re engaging your legs, core, arms, and back. You’ll notice improved flexibility, better cardio, and lean muscle definition. A typical hour-long class can burn around 400 to 600 calories. If you train consistently a few times a week, you’ll definitely feel and see the difference!
35. Will BJJ help me lose weight?
Yes, it’s fantastic for fat loss! Because Jiu-Jitsu combines intense cardio with full-body resistance training, it’s a powerhouse workout. When you pair your time on the mat with healthy eating, you’ll see some really great, lasting results.
36. Is it uncomfortable training in close contact with men?
It is totally normal to feel a bit hesitant about that at first! However, our academy has a strict culture of respect, everyone is expected to be professional and safe with their training partners. Most women find that any awkwardness fades away very quickly. Starting in our women-only classes is a perfect way to get comfortable before jumping into mixed classes!
37. How does Jiu-Jitsu help with mental health and daily stress?
The mat is like a sanctuary from daily stress. When you’re training, you have to be so focused on what you’re doing that there’s simply no room in your brain to worry about work, bills, or life’s pressures. So many of our female students tell us that leaving it all on the mat is the best part of their week!
38. I’m not flexible at all. Can I still do jiu-jitsu?
Absolutely! You don’t need to be flexible to start; you get flexible by doing Jiu-Jitsu. The natural movements we practice will gently improve your range of motion over time. Come as you are, book a free trial and let the training do the work!
39. Can I train during my period?
That is 100% up to you and how you feel! A lot of our students continue to train and find that the exercise actually helps ease their cramps. If you’re feeling a bit low on energy, you can always take it easy during class. Just listen to your body!
40. Will BJJ make me look too muscular or “bulky”?
Not at all! Jiu-Jitsu is great for toning and defining your muscles while reducing body fat, giving you a strong, lean look. Getting “bulky” usually requires heavy weightlifting and a very specific diet, so you don’t have to worry about that here.
41. Can pregnant women continue jiu-jitsu?
Once you know you’re pregnant, you should definitely stop live sparring (rolling). However, many of our instructors can help modify drills so you can safely practice techniques. Always check with your doctor first, and let us know so we can support you in the safest way possible!
42. What should a woman wear to a Jiu-Jitsu class?
For your free trial class, just wear comfortable workout gear like fitted leggings or shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. Please remember to take off any jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces) for safety! To make sure you get the complete experience, we’ll provide you with a full uniform (Gi) to wear during your trial.
43. Does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu help reduce fear when walking alone or in unsafe situations?
It makes a huge difference. While it doesn’t make anyone invincible, Jiu-Jitsu gives you practical tools: how to break someone’s grip, create safe distance, and control a situation so you can get away. Having that knowledge gives you a calm, grounded confidence as you go about your day.
44. I’m over 40. Is it too late to start jiu-jitsu?
It is never too late! We have wonderful students who started in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. Our GB1 Fundamentals program is designed to let you learn at your own pace. Jiu-Jitsu rewards patience and smart technique over raw speed, making it a perfect fit for adults of any age.
45. How is BJJ different from a standard women’s self-defense class?
Many standard self-defense classes teach you moves in scripted, cooperative scenarios. The issue is that when real adrenaline kicks in, it’s hard to remember a move you’ve only practiced a few times. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu builds deep muscle memory because you practice your techniques live against a resisting partner. When you need the skills, they’re actually there!
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FOR ADULTS
46. I’m out of shape and haven’t exercised in years. Can I start BJJ?
Yes, please do! You don’t need to be in shape to start Jiu-Jitsu—starting Jiu-Jitsu is how you get in shape! Our GB1 Fundamentals program is perfect for total beginners with no athletic background. Our friendly instructors will help you ease into it at a pace that feels right for you.
47. Am I too old to start jiu-jitsu?
There’s no such thing as too old! People discover BJJ in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s and absolutely love it. Because the art focuses on leverage and technique rather than just speed and strength, older practitioners often do incredibly well. Book a trial class and see for yourself!
48. How many days a week should I train as a beginner?
We usually recommend starting with two to three days a week. That gives you enough time on the mat to learn and build muscle memory, but also gives your body the rest it needs to recover. Trying to train every single day right away can lead to burnout, so pace yourself!
49. What is the BJJ belt order for adults?
The adult belt journey goes:
White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black.
After reaching black belt, practitioners can earn degrees, and eventually, the very rare Coral and Red belts, which are reserved for the pioneers of the sport!
50. How long does it take to earn a blue belt?
If you’re training consistently about 2 to 3 times a week, it usually takes around 1.5 to 2.5 years. Earning a blue belt means you have a solid grasp of the fundamentals and know how to safely spar (roll). At Gracie Barra West Jordan, we promote based on your personal growth, skill, and character, not just how long you’ve been here.
51. How long does it take to get a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
It’s a beautiful, long journey that typically takes about 8 to 12 years of dedicated practice. It takes time, but the amazing person you become along the way is the true reward!
52. What do I need to bring to my first BJJ class?
Just bring a positive attitude and wear some comfortable workout clothes! For your trial class, we will provide you with a full uniform (Gi) so you can get the authentic Jiu-Jitsu experience. Once you decide to join our family, our front desk will help you get set up with your own Gi, a rash guard, some flip-flops for walking around the academy, and a water bottle!
53. What does “rolling” mean in BJJ?
“Rolling” is just our friendly term for live sparring! It’s when you and a partner get to practice the techniques you’ve learned with some real resistance. It’s challenging, super fun, and usually everyone’s favorite part of class!
54. What is tapping out and when should I do it?
Tapping out is how you say “Okay, you got me, let go!” You just tap your partner or the mat twice. The golden rule is to tap early and tap often, especially when you’re new. There is zero ego or shame in tapping, it’s how we keep each other safe so we can train again tomorrow!
55. What are the most common injuries in BJJ?
Like any physical activity, minor bumps happen. The most common things are sore fingers, mild knee strains, or a stiff neck. The best way to stay safe is to train smart: warm up, communicate with your partner, leave your ego outside, and tap early! Training under the watchful eye of our skilled instructors really minimizes any risks.
56. Can I train BJJ if I have a bad back or bad knees?
Many of our students train safely with past injuries! We always recommend chatting with your doctor first. Once you’re cleared, just let your instructor know. A great coach will help you modify moves so you can train safely and even build strength around those areas over time.
57. What’s the difference between Gi and No-Gi jiu-jitsu?
Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing the traditional kimono, and you use the fabric to help control your opponent. No-Gi is practiced wearing a rash guard and shorts. Without the fabric to grab, No-Gi tends to be a bit faster and relies more on grabbing the body itself. Both are super fun, and we offer classes for both at GB West Jordan!
58. Is Jiu-Jitsu good exercise?
It is an unbelievable workout! In one class you’re getting cardio, strength training, flexibility, and a mental puzzle all at once. Many of our students tell us they are in the best shape of their lives thanks to Jiu-Jitsu. Want to get moving? Come try a class!
59. Do I have to compete?
Absolutely not! Competing is totally optional. Most of our students are here to get fit, learn self-defense, and hang out with great people. If you ever do want to try a tournament, we’ll be right there to coach you, but there is never any pressure.
60. What are the basic rules of etiquette on the mat?
It’s pretty simple: always wear a clean uniform, keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed, smell nice, be respectful to everyone, and tap early. We pride ourselves on having a very welcoming, family-friendly vibe at Gracie Barra West Jordan!
61. What is that swollen ear some fighters have? Will I get that?
That’s known as “cauliflower ear,” and it usually only happens to hardcore competitors who train intensely for years. For everyday students, it’s pretty rare. If your ears ever feel sore, you can just wear soft ear guards during class and you’ll be totally fine!
62. Is it normal to feel sore after the first few classes?
Oh, definitely! Jiu-Jitsu uses muscles you probably forgot you had. That good kind of soreness in the beginning just means your body is adapting and getting stronger. It goes away quickly as you get used to the movements.
63. What do those white tape stripes on the belt mean?
We call those “degrees.” Your instructor will add a piece of white tape to the black bar on your belt to celebrate your progress. Once you get four stripes, you’re getting very close to your next belt color! It’s a fun way to track your journey.
64. How do belt promotions work at Gracie Barra?
We don’t do stressful, formal testing days. Instead, your instructor is always watching your progress, noticing your attendance, your great attitude, and how well you treat your teammates. When you’re ready, we surprise you with a promotion and celebrate together!
65. Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for relieving work stress?
It’s the absolute best. When you’re trying to figure out a technique on the mat, you completely forget about that looming deadline or annoying email. You walk in carrying the weight of the day and leave feeling refreshed and happy. Ready to de-stress? Book a free trial with us!

71. Who are the instructors at Gracie Barra West Jordan?
Our instructors are highly trained black belts who have passed Gracie Barra’s strict Instructor Certification Program. They aren’t just great at Jiu-Jitsu; they are trained professionals who know how to teach safely, patiently, and clearly.

73. Is it mandatory to wear the Gracie Barra Gi (uniform)?

76. Can I drop into other Gracie Barra schools when I travel?
Yes! One of the coolest things about joining Gracie Barra is our global network. If you’re traveling for work or vacation and there’s a GB school nearby, you are usually welcome to drop in and train! It’s like having a family anywhere you go in the world.
77. Does Gracie Barra West Jordan focus on producing competitors?
Our main focus is always on YOU, the everyday student who wants to learn self-defense, get a great workout, and make friends. While we do have a competition team that we fully support, winning medals is never the main point of our academy.

80. Is Gracie Barra West Jordan a family-friendly gym?
100% yes! We have students ranging from 4 years old to over 60, and we love seeing whole families train together. We have a strict “no ego” policy, meaning everyone is treated with kindness and respect. It’s a place where you’ll feel right at home.
BJJ HISTORY & THE ART
81. What does “jiu-jitsu” actually mean?
The term comes from Japanese: “Jiu” means gentle or flexible, and “Jitsu” means art or technique. So, it translates to “The Gentle Art.” It perfectly describes our philosophy of using smart leverage and technique rather than brute force!
82. What is the difference between Japanese jiu-jitsu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu?
Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is an ancient Samurai art that includes striking and weapons. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu evolved from Judo and focuses almost entirely on taking the fight to the ground and using submissions. BJJ is highly specialized and has been proven incredibly effective over decades of practice.
83. How did jiu-jitsu arrive in Brazil?
In the early 1900s, a Japanese Judo master named Mitsuyo Maeda traveled to Brazil and taught his art to a young man named Carlos Gracie. Carlos then taught his brothers, and that one connection sparked a martial arts revolution!
84. What was the contribution of Carlos Gracie (Sr.) and Hélio Gracie to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Carlos Gracie learned from the Japanese master and shared the knowledge with his brothers, including Hélio. Because Hélio was smaller and not as strong, he couldn’t rely on muscle to make the moves work. So, he brilliantly adapted the techniques to rely on leverage and body mechanics! Together, they proved that a smaller person could successfully defend against a larger one, which is the heart of the Jiu-Jitsu we teach today.
85. Is Jiu-Jitsu better than boxing or Muay Thai for self-defense?
They are just different! Boxing and Muay Thai are amazing for striking while standing up. However, most real-life altercations end up on the ground, and that is where Jiu-Jitsu shines. Many experts agree that knowing BJJ is essential for well-rounded self-defense.
86. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs. wrestling: which is better for self-defense?
Both are fantastic! Wrestling is great for taking someone down and staying on top. Jiu-Jitsu adds the element of submissions (like chokes and joint locks) and teaches you how to fight off your back. They complement each other beautifully, and we incorporate wrestling takedowns into our BJJ curriculum!
87. What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and judo?
Judo is heavily focused on explosive throws from a standing position. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses more on what happens *after* you hit the ground, using control and submissions. They are great sister arts, and many BJJ players practice Judo to improve their takedowns!
88. Is BJJ the same as MMA (UFC)?
Nope! MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is a sport that combines striking (boxing, kicking) with grappling. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is purely grappling with zero striking. While BJJ is a huge and necessary part of MMA, they are two different things.
89. Does Jiu-Jitsu include punching or kicking?
Standard Jiu-Jitsu does not involve any striking. However, in our self-defense curriculum, we absolutely teach you how to protect yourself against punches, how to block, close the distance, and safely take control of the situation!
90. What is a “submission” in jiu-jitsu?
A submission is basically the “checkmate” of Jiu-Jitsu! It’s a technique, like a joint lock or a choke, applied so well that the other person has to tap out and give up. It’s how you safely end a match without anyone getting hurt.
91. What is a guard in jiu-jitsu?
The “guard” is a super important position where you are on your back, using your legs to control the person on top of you. It might look like a vulnerable spot, but in BJJ, it’s actually an attacking position where you can sweep them over or apply submissions!
92. What does “passing the guard” mean?
Passing the guard means you successfully get past your opponent’s legs when they are on their back, allowing you to move into a dominant position like side control. It’s a big deal and scores you points in a tournament!
93. Why do people say “Oss” in a jiu-jitsu class?
“Oss” is a traditional Japanese martial arts term that we use to say hello, thank you, or “I understand.” You’ll hear it a lot on the mat when we greet each other or acknowledge the instructor. It’s a great sign of respect!
94. Why is Jiu-Jitsu called “human chess”?
Because it’s a total brain game! You can’t just use muscle; you have to think a few steps ahead, set traps, and react to what your partner is doing. It keeps your mind just as active as your body!
95. What is the mount position in Jiu-Jitsu?
The mount is a very dominant position where you are sitting on top of your opponent’s torso while they are on their back. It gives you a lot of control and sets you up perfectly to apply submissions.
96. Are chokes dangerous?
When practiced on the mat under the supervision of our trained instructors, they are very safe! Jiu-Jitsu chokes apply pressure to the sides of the neck, not the windpipe. You feel the pressure, you tap, your partner lets go immediately, and you bump fists and keep training!
97. What should I do if I’m attacked by multiple people on the street?
The best self-defense is to run away! Jiu-Jitsu is designed for one-on-one situations. Going to the ground when there are multiple attackers is very dangerous. We always teach situational awareness and escaping as your first line of defense.
98. What is the difference between a black belt, coral belt, and red belt?
A black belt shows a high level of mastery and usually takes about 10 years to earn. A coral belt is given to masters who have been active black belts for decades. The red belt is the absolute highest honor, reserved only for the founding grandmasters of the art!
